Keeping your gutters and downspouts clean is the best way to keep your basement dry and prevent water from entering your home.  A clogged gutter can end up being an expensive repair if the water enters instead of drains away from your home Proper Gutter Maintenance will keep your roof healthy and prolong the need to do costly roof and siding repairs.

Clogged gutters can lead to serious damage to the exterior of the home, causing the facia board, soffit, roof decking, and rafter tails to rot. Repairing those structural elements can be much more costly than a simple gutter cleaning at least once per year.

We’re more than happy to do this nasty job for you. Ask us about moss and algae treatment/prevention options while you’re at it.

We also do gutter repair. Often gutter fasteners come loose and the gutters begin to pull away from facia boards and rafter ends. We use HangFast gutter hangers that use a large lag screw fastener and sturdy aluminum bracket to hold the gutter permanently in place. Dripping seams? The only way to fix that is the thoroughly remove the old sealant and apply a liberal coat of new sealant to the joint.

Roof Cleaning and Maintenance

The most important thing you can do to extend the life of your roof is to prevent moss proliferation. Moss rhizomes (root-like structures) extend underneath the shingle tabs and around the granules, holding moisture on the roof. As the moss grows, it actually begins to lift the shingle tabs as well as pries the granules loose. Once underneath the shingles, it is more difficult to eradicate since it is hidden from exposure to any treatments that may be applied. Once the granules are loose, the asphalt layer is exposed to the sun, leading to more rapid deterioration of the shingle.

Steps to Protect Your Roof:

Prevention

Prevent the moss from ever growing with regular maintenance. For most roofs, an annual treatment is necessary to prevent the proliferation of moss. We typically use sodium bicarbonate, a natural and low cost method that when applied correctly can be just as effective as any other treatment. Zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, laundry detergents, etc. all end up in our waterways and are harmful to most aquatic species. We’d rather play it safe and use the most natural approach possible.

Treatment

In cases where the moss has already proliferated, a low cost approach is to treat and leave. This is the safest option for the shingles, but doesn’t give you an instant clean look. As long as you’re okay with how it looks, let the moss die and release from the shingles. When we return for subsequent services we can blow much of the loose moss from the roof.

Cleaning

In many cases, the moss can be physically removed without damaging the shingles. When the moss is clumped up along the bottom lip of each shingle, a small scraper can be used to pull the bulk of the moss of with minimal contact with the shingles themselves. Removing the moss by pressure washing or brushing is not recommended because it pulls roof granules off and shortens the life of the shingles. We never pressure wash asphalt shingle roofs.

After the bulk of the moss is removed we apply a treatment to kill the remaining moss and moss spores.
